Ask Andy: The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

The introduction of the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) could make 2014 a breakthrough year for renewable heating – and Cardiff-based renewable energy experts AE Energy Solutions have recently gained full approval to offer homeowners in Wales all heating measures as part of this potentially lucrative scheme. Managing Director Andy Edwards sheds some light on the government’s latest drive towards a greener Wales.

What is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)?
A government financial incentive to encourage a switch to renewable heating systems, the RHI aims to help Wales, and indeed the UK, reduce its carbon emissions by 2020.

Who is it for?
The scheme is available for households both on and off the grid who are looking to adopt renewable heating measures in the home. Homes without mains gas have the most potential to save on fuel bills and decrease carbon emissions.

What renewable heating systems does the RHI cover?
Eligible heating systems include biomass boilers, biomass pellet stoves with integrated boilers, air source and ground source heat pumps, and solar thermal panels (which supply hot water).

Don’t these measure require a lot of space?
Not any longer. Recent developments mean that a once bulky biomass pellet boiler can now be installed occupying just 0.38 m2 of space, which means that it’s not just larger-style properties that can take advantage of the scheme.

What are the benefits?
Not only will you be using energy more efficiently and reducing your carbon emissions, you will also receive quarterly, tax-free, payments for seven years on approved heating installations.

How much money will I receive?
This depends largely on the type of technology you install, how much energy the installation can produce, and how much energy you actually use. However, the payments you receive should easily cover the initial investment, and can possibly even pay for fuel and maintenance costs over the seven-year period, too.
